On the 13rd of June my family and our friend went to a small trip to Esztergom. Our main goal was to find an old camping site, where our friend and my wife first met. Meanwhile we had some time to visit the basilica. The basilica, being the cathedral of the Primate of Hungary, is the first in rank, and also the largest among the churches in the country. The laying of the foundation-stone took place in 1822. The construction had taken almost 50 years, because of long intervals due to the vacancy of the archbishop’s seat, and because of the 1848 War of Independence. Finally the basilica was consecrated on August 31, 1856 during the mass composed for the occasion by Ferenc Liszt. The dimensions are 117 meters in length, 47 meters in breadth (97 meters at the towers). The total height of the basilica is 100 meters, the inner height is 68 meters.
Stairway… hmmm… Ladder to Heaven:
The beautiful panorama after climbing 413 steps to the top:
Then we had a chance to go to the other side of Danube by ferry and visit my father in law’s home village. We took a ride on the narrow gauge train and visited the Forestry Museum.
